A few of you have expressed the desire to see more concrete
collaboration out of this group, and more specifically, to possibly
design a tool as a group. This desire came up a few times in the
recent "On Inquiry-Oriented Systems" thread:    (01)

First, I want to point you all to a post I made last April describing
the goals of this collaboratory:    (04)

  http://collab.blueoxen.net/forums/yak/2003-04/msg00002.html    (05)

You'll note that designing new tools is not one of the goals. That is
not to say that it can't be a short-term, bounded goal that emerges
from this group or perhaps a subset of the group. I think the
distinction is important, largely because the mindset in the two cases
are different.    (06)

This group is diverse and eclectic, and it will most likely grow more
so in the coming months. The common bond is the desire to improve
collaboration. What I most want to see with this group is the
development of a shared language. Once this happens, I think several
more concrete, bounded opportunities to collaborate will emerge, not
just tool-oriented (like the projects Jack, Eric, John, and Murray
often describe), but also human systems-oriented (like what Ted Kahn
is doing).    (07)

I personally don't measure the success of this group on whether the
entire group as a whole collaborates on something concrete. I
consider this group successful when I see shared memes evolve and when
I see small subgroups connecting via this collaboratory and
collaborating. When I see Danny and Eric S. talking about purple
numbers in their blogs, I know we're on the right track. When Al or
Simon tells the group that the latest version of Compendium supports
purple numbers, I know we're on the right track. When I hear people
using patterns described in this group -- ThinkOutLoud, for example --
in conversation, I know we're on the right track.    (08)

I encourage collaboration in all forms. I encourage the use of this
forum as a recruiting tool for individual projects. I want to see
continued brainstorming and sharing of ideas. Most importantly, I
want each member of this collaboratory to feel that being part of this
group helps make them Less Dumb. This, in my opinion, is ultimately
the goal of this collaboratory.    (09)
