For a good IBIS discussion to occur and remain interesting and
productive, it's wise to decide on the protocols. Here, I am thinking in
terms of a couple of behaviors and the agreement on the nouns and verbs
to use. Eugene and I have taken Jeff Conklin's IBIS course. Actually, I
took it twice, and, like Eugene, I have used it in professional practice
(just a few times, story some other time). My point here is that I am
making the case that Jeff has evolved a really concise vocabulary which
involves just a few words:
Question
Idea
Pro
Con
Note
Conclusion
There are others, some of which permit nesting trees and doing other
things. But, there are some rules of engagement which go along with
those words. A brief sketch is this:
Ideas follow Questions and other Ideas ("subclassing the idea ")
Questions follow Questions and Ideas (maybe also Pro and Con -- I
don't remember)
Pro and Con follow Ideas and other Pro and Con posts.
The main rule of engagement is this: stay on topic. If you need to start
a new topic, look up the tree and find a place to ask the right question
or offer the right idea to start your new thread. (01)
And, it's ok to tell stories to make your point. Thanks Chris!
If I got anything wrong here, there's gonna be hell to pay because there
are some IBIS blackbelts on this list.
