Sure, you can update purple numbers on the server-side.  That's what
PurpleWiki does now.  The problem is that the client must see the
purple numbers too, so that the identifiers can stay with the
appropriate content.  Building support into an htmlArea like tool
would allow the client to handle the identifiers without the user
worrying about what they are, even hiding them altogether in edit
mode.    (03)
