I think Eugene has the record straight. I simply did what I saw people
doing with blogs.    (01)

Actually, NexistWiki 1.0 did put the whole number up, with the hash. It
got seriously ugly.    (02)

NexistWiki goes one step further, and this was not borrowed from the
permalink idea, but rather just turned out to be similar. Each object
which gets a purple number also gets a permalink-like link. That makes
for some fine-grained presentation capabilities. Those are associated
with the ideas I expressed in the augmented storytelling talk
http://www.nexist.org/sc2002/, such that, on the chance that someone
might want to augment any particular purple-numbered object (sentence,
paragraph, illustration, whatever), there is a homepage for it. The
latest NexistWiki, see for example Ted Kahn's Science Collaboratory at
http://www.nexist.org/hf/, uses tiny blue arrows [1] to point to the
homepage of that object, where you can open an IBIS discussion, add
relational links to the object (an idea shamelessly stolen from the
ScholOnto project from KMi), and otherwise deface the heck out of the
object -- without disturbing the original story itself. The idea of
"permalink" never entered into that thinking because, unlike blogs, a
NexistWiki page was intended to be a story page, one that doesn't change
all that much over time.    (03)

[1] those arrows were created by Adam Cheyer for the bootstrap.org page.
My plan has always been to use the downward pointing arrow first, but
when someone adds content to the linked page, then switch to an upward
pointing arrow to indicate there is a reason to go visit.    (04)
