Those with licensing concerns about ATT's GraphViz might be interested
in the roughly comparable VCG (Visualization of Compiler Graphs):
http://rw4.cs.uni-sb.de/users/sander/html/gsvcg1.html
This code was last updated in 1995 and nobody has really contributed to
it despite it being GPLed. That was because its crown jewels (the graph
layout routines) were released in obfuscated C. (01)
There is a link from here to the latest, now de-uglified version:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/dia-list/2003-February/msg00029.html
http://introspector.sourceforge.net/debian/incoming/vcg_1.30-4.tar.gz
Apparently the author is now no longer involved in a commercial product
which exploited some of his original algorithms. Hence his motivation
for the uglification has vanished. Expect further VCG development soon
because of dissatisfaction with the license on the GraphViz code. (02)
