====================================================================== (01)
In which a summary of recent activity on the yak@collab and
tools-yak@collab lists and CollabWiki is provided. (02)
Please respond with corrections, comments, questions, and suggestions. (03)
---------------------------------------------------------------------- (04)
Once again, I'm subbing in for Chris, who's recovering from a crazy
trip to San Francisco and general overexposure to yours truly. He'll
be back next week. (05)

== Blue Oxen News ==================================================== (010)
Blue Oxen Associates threw its Launch Party on April 8, 2003.[1] Among
the over 100 people who attended were several members of the Collab
collaboratory.[2] Thank you all who showed, and thank you all who
sent their regards! (011)
We also released our first research report, "An Introduction to Open
Source Communities":[3] (012)

== Collab Collaboratory Mission ====================================== (015)
A few weeks ago, Garold Johnson had asked about the purpose of these
collaboratories. I cited four main goals, and expounded on them.[1]
Feedback was underwhelming. Either people agreed with everything I
said, or were too busy doing their taxes. (016)

== Pattern Languages ================================================= (018)
Dorai Thodla cited a paper on collaboration patterns:[1] (019)

Tom Munnecke: pattern language for a conservation economy:[2] (021)
http://www.conservationeconomy.net/ (022)
Tom criticized it for being malgnostic. (023)

== Wiki Features ===================================================== (025)
Andrius Kulikauskas suggested it would be neat to be able to sync the
contents of two Wikis.[1] He also said it would be nice to have
e-mail alerts when Wiki pages changed. Jack Park responded that
syndication enables these features.[2] John Sechrest noted that
several Wikis already support syndication and e-mail alerts.[3] (026)
Dorai Thodla asked whether there was a common format for Wiki pages,
and whether there was common metadata associated with these pages.[4]
John responded that there was not, and that he, Garold Johnson, and I
had started work a while back on documenting these differences. (027)
Andrius suggested, in the spirit of coevolution, that we try a
syndication experiment.[5] He suggested starting with our group's
Wiki and SocialText's Wiki.[6] (028)

== Xpertweb ========================================================== (030)
Andrius told the group that he was beginning work on the Xpertweb
project:[1] (031)
http://xpertweb.com/ (032)
I asked him to clarify what Xpertweb does, and what he'd be doing for
them.[2] I also asked him to compare Xpertweb with other reputation
systems, specifically Affero and Friendly Favors: (033)
http://www.affero.com/ (034)
http://www.friendlyfavors.org/ (035)
Andrius responded with a detailed comparison between the three
systems.[3] (036)

== GivingSpace ======================================================= (038)
Tom provided some more background on GivingSpace's latest project --
an Uplift Academy focused on HIV/AIDS orphans in Africa.[1] He noted
Larry Harvey's lesson from Burning Man, which emphasized the value of
having an event around which to focus. Tom's planned event for his
Uplift Academy is an "uplift day," aimed at September 12, 2003.[2] (039)
Tom invited the group to his GivingSpace seminar on April 7-8 at
Stanford.[3] (040)

== Scraping Web Pages ================================================ (042)
Jack Park asked for advice on scraping Web pages.[1] He experimented
with XPP and JTidy, but was looking for other solutions: (043)
http://www.extreme.indiana.edu/xgws/xsoap/xpp/ (044)
http://lempinen.net/sami/jtidy/ (045)
Matt Schneider recommended Clinton Wong's _Web Client Programming_ and
Sean Burke's _Perl & LWP_, both of which use libwww-perl.[2] (046)
I recommended NekoHTML and WWW::Mechanize: (047)
http://www.apache.org/~andyc/neko/doc/html/ (048)
http://www.perl.com/pub/a/2003/01/22/mechanize.html (049)
Danny Ayers pointed Jack to a page that listed several Java HTML
parser: (050)

Andrius pointed Jack to two of his lab members that might be able to
help: Peter Kaminski and Shannon Clark.[5] (052)
Simon Buckingham Shum recommended Dome:[6] (053)

Shawn Murphy recommended looking at CritLink code:[7] (055)

== Compendium To Wiki ================================================ (058)
Chris challenged the group to build a translator from the Compendium
DTD to Wiki format.[1] This would allow posting of Dialog Maps onto
the Wiki. Simon Buckingham Shum offered assistance.[2] (059)

== Nooron Content Licensing ========================================== (061)
Andrius asked about the copyright status of content in Nooron.[1] Tom
responded that it would fall under some open source license, most
likely the GPL.[2] Andrius noted that the GPL is not appropriate for
content, and proposed primarily public domain.[3] (062)

== ReStructured Text Primer ========================================== (064)
Eric Armstrong drew attention to Richard Jones's, "A ReStructured Text
Primer":[1] (065)
http://docutils.sourceforge.net/docs/rst/quickstart.html (066)
Jon Cheyer responded by comparing Jones's notes with how Mozilla
works.[2] Notably, Jon also used Matt Schneider's PurpleSlurple for
links.[3] (067)
